Cycle route around Lake Turawa

The cycle route around Lake Turawa is one of the most attractive cycling routes in the Opole region. It leads through picturesque forests and along the shores of the Large, Middle and Small Lakes, with plenty of viewpoints, rest areas and access to beaches and marinas.

The route suits families with children as well as more experienced cyclists. It runs mainly on asphalt roads and forest tracks through the unique nature of the Turawa Forests and protected areas.

Along the way you can visit the beaches of Lake Turawa, the historic palace in Turawa, the educational trails of the Turawa Forest District and lovely bird-watching spots.

Palace ruins in Turawa

The palace in Turawa is one of the most interesting historic sites in the Opole region. Its history dates back to the 18th century, when it was built as a grand Baroque residence on the initiative of Martin Scholz von Loewenckron. Over the years the palace was extended several times and belonged to well-known Silesian families, including the von Garnier family.

After the Second World War the building housed a children’s home and later the municipal office. Over time it was abandoned and fell into ruin, yet it has kept many valuable architectural features and the unique atmosphere of a former residence.

Today the ruins, surrounded by a historic park, attract history lovers, photographers and visitors exploring Turawa and the Lake Turawa area.

Joachim Halupczok Monument

The monument in Niwki commemorates Joachim Halupczok, one of Poland’s greatest road cyclists, who was born in the village. He won an Olympic silver medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the amateur world championship title in 1989.

Unveiled in 2010, the monument shows the cyclist on his bike, symbolising his greatest passion and sporting achievements. The sculpture is the work of Opole artist Wit Pichurski. It stands in the centre of Niwki and is an important place of remembrance and a local attraction.

Avenue of Stars of Polish Song

The Avenue of Stars of Polish Song is one of Opole’s best-known sights, located in the very heart of the city, opposite the town hall. It was created in 2004 as a tribute to outstanding artists, composers and lyricists of the Polish music scene and the National Festival of Polish Song.

Bronze stars with the names and autographs of the artists are set into the pavement of the market square – among them Czesław Niemen, Maryla Rodowicz, Edyta Górniak, Kora, Marek Grechuta and the bands Lady Pank and Dżem. Today the avenue has more than 80 stars, and new ones are added regularly.

A walk along the Avenue of Stars is a journey through the history of Polish music and a must-see in the capital of Polish song.

Museum of Polish Song

The Museum of Polish Song in Opole is a modern, interactive museum devoted to the history of Polish popular music. Located in the grounds of the Millennium Amphitheatre, it tells the story of Polish song from the 1920s to the present day.

Visitors can explore multimedia exhibitions, listen to thousands of recordings, watch archive films and learn about the biggest stars of the Polish music scene. A special highlight are the recording booths, where anyone can record their own version of a famous song and take it home as a souvenir.

Opened in 2016, the museum has become one of Opole’s biggest attractions and an important part of the city’s cultural heritage.

Opole Zoo

Opole Zoo, set on the picturesque Bolko Island, is one of the largest and most visited attractions in the region. Across several dozen hectares it is home to more than 1,500 animals from around 290 species from all over the world.

You can see giraffes, zebras, gorillas, red pandas, lemurs, anteaters and California sea lions, among others. Feeding shows and the modern, naturalistic enclosures are especially popular.

With playgrounds, picnic areas, places to eat and plenty of activities for children, the zoo is a perfect destination for a family day out.
